CMIE Supports Canada’s Global Medical Isotope Leadership with New Isotope Production System at Bruce Power

The Canadian Medical Isotope Ecosystem (CMIE) is pleased to highlight the latest advancement made possible through funding from the Government of Canada’s Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF).

As part of the initial $35 million SIF investment in CMIE, support is being directed toward the installation of a new Isotope Production System (IPS) at Bruce Power’s Unit 6. This initiative strengthens Canada’s position as a global leader in the supply of cancer fighting medical isotopes.

The funding will directly support the partnership between Bruce Power and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON), helping expand Indigenous involvement in Canada’s growing isotope sector.

Federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, the Hon. Tim Hodgson, visited Bruce Power to mark this milestone. With the support of the CMIE, the new IPS in Unit 6 will significantly boost Canada’s ability to produce Lutetium-177 (Lu-177), a critical therapeutic isotope used worldwide.

“This investment is a crucial step toward meeting Ontario’s goal of doubling medical isotope production by 2030,” said Dr. Holly Bilton, Chair of the Canadian Medical Isotope Ecosystem. “The CMIE is proud to support this initiative and help ensure Canada’s medical isotope ecosystem remains strong, resilient, and a global leader in the advancement of cancer care.”

“Medical isotopes are a cornerstone of modern medicine, enabling the early detection and effective treatment of illnesses that affect all too many Canadians. The Government of Canada’s investment in the Canadian Medical Isotope Ecosystem is an important step towards ensuring that Canada remains a global leader in the area of medical isotope R&D and production. This strategic investment reflects our dedication to both keeping Canadians healthy, and strengthening an important sector of our economy.” said the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions.

This installation builds on Bruce Power’s success as the site of the world’s first commercial reactor-based production of Lu-177 in Unit 7, which was also partially funded by the CMIE. With this new investment, Canada continues to solidify its role as a global leader in both clean energy and life-saving medical innovation.

About CMIE

CMIE is an initiative created to accelerate R&D investment, collaboration, technology adoption and training to enable Canada to lead in the innovation of medical isotopes. Through a unique combination of co-investment, cross-industry collaboration, and IP development, we are building a strong national medical isotope innovation ecosystem.
